Solution, suspension or gas-phase polymerisation of dienes is effected using a substituted cyclopentadienyltitanium trichloride compound as catalyst, optionally on a support and/or optionally with a co-catalyst. A catalyst containing 1,3-di-methylcyclopentadienyltitanium trichloride is also claimed as being new. Solution, suspension or gas-phase polymerisation of dienes is effected using a substituted cyclopentadienyltitanium trichloride of formula (I) as catalyst, optionally on a support and/or optionally with a co-catalyst: R = 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl or an alkaryl, fluoroalkyl or fluoroaryl group with 1-10C in the alkyl and 6-20C in the aryl; Cp = a cyclopentadienyl group or a group containing such a structure; and n = 1, 2, 3 or 4.
