Production of stabilized enzyme layers on a substrate comprises immobilizing the enzyme on the substrate and simultaneously or subsequently depositing a polymer layer on the substrate by a gas-phase deposition process. An Independent claim is also included for an enzyme-substrate composite comprising an enzyme layer on a substrate in which the enzyme is embedded in and/or coated with a polymer layer produced by a gas-phase deposition process.
