The method involves applying leads (42,43) and contacts (45,46) on a common substrate (40) for several electro-optical modules (50). An opening (56) is provided in the substrate, the edges of the opening being formed with respect to transducer modules to be carried on the contacts, so that the modules extend beyond the edges and their optically active zone lies in the opening region. Connectors (62,63) for the transducer modules are connected to the contacts of the substrate. The substrate is dismantled after assembly of the converter modules.
