Cables with two or more insulated conductors (1-4) in a single layer underneath an external covering are jointed (tapped) by locating the position of at least one said conductor (1-4), marking the external covering of the cable to indicate its position and afterwards making a connection to that conductor through a local aperture (13) located according to the indicated position. To ensure the correctness of the indicated position, at least one grip (8, 9) is applied to the cable in the region of the proposed joint before, while or immediately after marking and remains in place at least until the aperture (13) is formed (and preferably permanently). The grip (8, 9) may be a compression sleeve (8, 9) and may extend over the whole joint area (a window being formed in it, either before or after application, to give access for the aperture (13) to be formed). Alternatively, there may be two sleeves (8, 9), one each side of the joint.
