A traverse mechanism comprises two parallel endless belts 94, 96 driven by a motor coupled to pulleys 54, 56 and 74, 76 in the same direction at the same speed and a yarn guide 106 which is moved along two guide rails 102 (104) by the belts in a movement characterised by a simple harmonic motion at each direction reversal of the yarn guide 106. As shown, the traverse guide 106 comprises a body part with an elongate slot therein which receives a pin 114 driven by the belts 94, 96. The belts 94, 96 are provided with a series of identical driving lugs 98 of different pitch to the teeth 62 on the driving pulleys 60 so that the belts can slip relative to each other and thus maintain the yarn guide 106 aligned on the guide rails 102 (104). The power supply to the motor driving the endless belts can be interrupted so as to avoid ribbon winding. The belts 94, 96 can be made of polyurethane reinforced with polyester. The yarn guide 106 can be mounted on self lubricating plastics bushings. The yarn is wound onto a drum driven package winder which is arranged so as to maintain the traverse device at a constant distance from the packages, see Figs. 1 and 6 not shown. The bobbin can be supported on a swinging arm which is moved away from the package driving roll by a handle which also brakes the arbor supporting the package, see Fig. 1. |
