Holograms which are free from undesirable line structures are produced by first forming a phase hologram and then copying it. The phase hologram may be obtained by bleaching a density hologram formed by the interference between an object beam and a reference beam of coherent light. In the copying process a spectral lamp, e.g. a mercury ore lamp with a filter for the green line, may be used. Alternatively, if the phase hologram has in line reference pencils incident in the optical axis an incandescent lamp may be used as the light source for copying. The copy holograms are themselves density holograms.
