An improved mold and process for continuous casting involves the use of a mold surface that is fabricated from a material, such as diamond, that is nonmetallic, an efficient conductor of heat and that is more degradationresistant than the conventional materials and coatings that are used on mold surfaces. In one embodiment, the nonmetallic material is bonded to a conventional mold liner. In a second embodiment, the entire mold wall can be fabricated from the nonmetallic material. In another aspect of the invention, since materials such as diamond are transparent in the infrared range, the temperature of the outer shell of the casting can be monitored through the nonmetallic material without interfering with the casting process, and this information can be used to control one or more variables in the casting process.
