In the present invention there is disclosed a purification process of water and epsilon-caprolactam mixture that process comprises hydrogenation of the water and epsilon-caprolactam mixture with hydrogen contained in this mixture and in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst, whereby first the water and epsilon-caprolactam mixture is brought into contact with gaseous hydrogen, whereupon hydrogen is dissolved in this water and epsilon-caprolactam mixture and then this mixture containing hydrogen is brought into contact with the hydrogenation catalyst, whereby 90 to 100 percent of hydrogen being present during hydrogenation is dissolved in this water and epsilon-caprolactam mixture.
