The invention concerns in particular a bacterial Pseudomonas alginovora strain and its use for the production of alginate-lyase. It also concerns a method for depolymerising alginate which consists in incubating alginate in a solution containing at least a monovalent or divalent salt with ionic strength not less than 0.05 M, in the presence of an alginate-lyase produced from a strain of said bacterium, and optionally, in recuperating the fraction of the resulting depolymerised alginate fragments. The enzyme acts as M-lyase or as M and G-lyase. The invention further concerns the resulting depolymerised fragments.
