The vehicle door lock includes components mounted on the door itself (6) and on the fixed door frame (12). An elastically compressible joint (16) is provided between the door and the fixed frame which is compressed during the door closing action. During the opening of the door the energy of compression of the joint is used to assist the release of the latch (2), with a reduction in the friction between the latch and the hook (3) in the course of the door opening movement.
