Mixtures of polymethylol alkanes are prepared by reacting, in an alkaline medium, formaldehyde and a first alkyl aldehyde which is acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde or n-butyraldehyde, said formaldehyde being present in an amount which is at least 1À5 mole in excess of the stoichiometric amount and in the same medium the excess formaldehyde is reacted with a second alkyl aldehyde of at least one more carbon atom than the first and which is propionaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde or n-valeraldehyde and which is in amounts of about 1/3 mole per mole of excess formaldehyde, the reaction medium during said reactions being maintained at a pH of at least 9, and thereafter reducing the pH of the medium to below 8. The resulting reaction mixture may be filtered or centrifuged and the remaining ionizable material removed from the solution by ion exchange. Examples prepare mixtures of monopentaerythritol with trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane or trimethylolbutane and of trimethylolethane and trimethylolbutane. |
