Long-wavelength optical fiber amplifier e.g. for optical signals in the range of 1580 nm

The amplifier uses an erbium doped optical fiber (EDF) to amplify the input signal, using pump light supplied by a pumping unit (210,230,260) placed in front of and behind the EDF (250). An amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) reflecting unit (200) is placed in front of the pumping unit, so any ASEs generated by the EDF are coupled to the long wavelength input light, and input back into the EDF.
