PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the inexpensive paper money inspection device of a simple structure while preventing malfunction and paper money jamming, etc., in the paper money read check device of conventional self-service deposit terminal equipment. SOLUTION: In this device for inspecting the state of bank notes, the respective bank notes 46 are individually and separately transported through a brush 42, and at the time, the bristle tip 44 of the brush 42 is brought into contact with one surface of the bank note 46. A piezoelectric bimorph vibration sensor 50 is mounted on the brush and voltage output from the sensor 50 depends on the vibration amplitude of the bristle tip 44 when the brush 42 rubs the bank note 46. As the state of the bank note 46 gets worse, that is as the surface gets coarser, the vibration amplitude of the bristle tip 44 becomes larger. Thus, from the voltage output of the sensor 50, whether or not the bank note 46 is in a receivable excellent state is judged.
