PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a magnetic recording medium with which the surface characteristics of a magnetic layer surface are improved, sufficient traveling durability is assured under various conditions and electromagnetic transaction characteristics are sufficiently assured. SOLUTION: The magnetic layer is formed by applying a magnetic coating material mainly composed of ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic base and drying the coating. This magnetic layer surface is subjected to a smoothing treatment and a lubricant soln. using a solvent of <=8.3 in dissolution coefft. is applied on the magnetic layer surface. The nonmagnetic base on which the magnetic layer is formed is blanked to a disk shape after the application of the lubricant to manufacture a magnetic disk. This magnetic disk is subjected to a heat treatment at the temp. higher than the glass transition temp. of the binder and lower than the glass transition temp. of the nonmagnetic base. Further, a crosslinkable compd. may be incorporated into the magnetic coating material and the heat treatment may be executed under temp. conditions of 50 to 90 deg.C.
