PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the display defect by an alignment defect by regulating four parameters; a level difference angle, level difference spacing and level difference height of the level difference on the inner surfaces of substrates with which the liquid crystal layer comes into contact and a pretilt angle of the liquid crystals of the liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: An insulating film 2 consisting of silicon nitride is formed by CVD so as to cover part of pixel electrode films 3, an interlayer insulating film 4 and drain wiring 11. This insulating film 2 is etched and patterned in the regions corresponding to pixels 6 and, therefore, the level difference 12 is generated on the inner surface with which the lower substrate 5 comes into contact with the liquid crystal layer 1. This level difference 12 may be expressed by the three parameters; the level difference angleϕ, the level difference spacing (m) and the level difference height (h). The angle formed by the alignment layers and the liquid crystals of the liquid crystal layer 1 is expressed by the pretilt angleθ. The expansion of the alignment defective regions to alignment normal parts may be suppressed and the display defect may be prevented by controlling the four parameters; the level differenceθ, the level difference spacing (m), the level difference (h) and the pretilt angleθ.
