PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a monomer for synthesizing a fluorine-containing polymer, a raw material or a synthetic intermediate of a fluorine-containing product such as a surfactant, agricultural chemicals, a medical agent, etc., and further a coolant or a foaming agent without a possibility of destruction of the ozone layer. SOLUTION: This fluorine-containing olefin is 3,4-dihydro-hexafluoro-1-butene of the formula: CF2=CFCHFCHF2. The compound is, e.g. obtained by treating (A) 1,4-dibromo-hexafluoro-2-butene with (B) a hydrogenating agent in an amount of 1,5-5.0 mol, preferably 2.0-3.0 mol based on the component A, in the presence of a solvent, as necessary, at from -20 deg.C to 60 deg.C, preferably 0-40 deg.C for 15 min-24 hrs, preferably 30 min-6 hrs. The component A is obtained by reacting hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene with bromine. As the component B, hydrogenated tri-n- butyltin, hydrogenated triphenyltin, triethylsilane, tributylsilane, etc., is preferably used.
