PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide inexpensive graphite cast iron for engine casing having high strength, excellent in vibration damping capacity and good in castability. SOLUTION: Graphite cast iron contg., by weight, 3.5 to 4.2% C, 1.8 to 2.5% Si, 0.25 to 0.5% Mn, <=0.1% P, <=0.02% S, 0.010 to 0.020% Mg, 0.3 to 0.8% Cu, 0.3 to 1.0% Sn, and the balance Fe and having compact vermicular graphite 1 in the base is selected as the material for engine casing.
