PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera for shortening time required for preliminary image pickup and shortening the time required before main photographing and the control method. SOLUTION: After a main switch S0 is turned ON, image display by a read pattern P1 is performed at all times in a display part, and when a switch S1 is turned to an ON state, an AF operation is started (ST4). Since the AF operation is performed based on pixel data obtained by second-forth read patterns P2-P4 selected by the combination of the ON/OFF of the switches SAF1 and SAF2, in steps ST5 and ST6, the ON/OFF state of the switches SAF1 and SAF2 is confirmed.
