PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a conveying amount of recording paper in detection delay time of a paper sheet sensor accurately to obtain the length of recording paper correctly in a paper sheet conveying mechanism in which recording paper is conveyed intermittently. SOLUTION: The number of conveyance steps in paper sheet conveyance from the time when a tip of recording paper is detected by a paper sheet sensor (S2: YES) to the time when a rear end thereof is detected is counted by a counter (S3), and the number of conveyance steps in detection delay time of the paper sheet sensor is stored in a RAM at the same time. When the rear end of recording paper is detected (S5: YES), the number of conveyance steps stored in the RAM is subtracted from the number of conveyance steps by this counting to obtain a length of recording paper (S8). As a result, a detection error of the length of recording paper caused by detection delay time of the paper sheet sensor is compensated even in a system in which recording paper is conveyed intermittently.
