PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a visual angle characteristic by operating a PALC panel in an intra-plane switching mode. SOLUTION: After a voltage between an anode 24 and a cathode 26 of a channel is made to an ignition voltage Vf, plasma is formed in the channel, this voltage is made to an upkeep voltage Vs and a prescribed drive voltage Vd is supplied to a data drive electrode to keep the plasma. After the voltage between channel electrodes is reduced up to a level insufficient for keeping the plasma, a residual bias voltage Vb is kept and an electric field having a component in parallel to a cover sheet 6 is generated.
