PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone system capable of easily setting preferential sounding for preferentially sounding any specified base unit or hand set by arbitrarily setting preferential sounding and preferential sounding term for each base unit or hand set, and simultaneously reducing a response error caused by missing ring back tones at the time of incoming by sounding all the base unit and hand sets after the lapse of the preferential sounding term set for each base unit and hand set. SOLUTION: When a calling signal from an external communication line 3 is detected (S1: YES), the measurement of a measuring instrument 19 is started and when a telephone set, to which preferential sounding is set, exists in a storage part 21 of a base unit 1 (S3: YES), the base unit 1 or hand set 2, to which preferential sounding is set, is sounded (S7). When a prescribed lapse of time is measured by the measuring instrument 19 (S5: NO), all the base unit 1 and hand sets 2 are sounded.
