Alkali metal salts of a polycarboxylic acid are obtained by producing a suspension of a polyaldehyde by polymerizing an a -b -ethylenically unsaturated aldehyde in the presence of a Redox system containing silver nitrate as reducing agent making the suspension alkaline by adding alkali metal ions thereto, and thereafter oxidizing the polyaldehyde by passing oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas through the heated suspension, whereby the desired alkali metal salt of a polycarboxylic acid is produced in solution. The free polycarboxylic acid may be produced by filtering off from the solution the hydrated silver oxide formed as a result of the suspension being made alkaline, and acidifying the filtrate. |
