PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally control the feed of a sludge to a dewatering apparatus and an operating condition thereof by providing along a feed direction of the sludge at least two filtrate amount detection means for detecting a filtrate amount to a gravity dewatering part in that which has the gravity dewatering part for filtering and dewatering the sludge by gravity. SOLUTION: A dewatering apparatus 1 wherein flocculation sludge to which a flocculant is added is fed thereto, has filter cloths 2, 3 spreaded between respective rolls, and the flocculation sludge is fed to a gravity dewatering part 4 wherein filtration and dewatering are executed by gravity. In this case, filtrate amount detecting means 21, 22 are arranged on an upstream side and a downstream side in a feed direction of the sludge in the gravity dewatering part 4. Then, detection signals by the filtrate amount detecting means 21, 22 are sent to a processing part of a controller, and a working signal to a sludge feed pump or/and a flocculant feed pump is controlled by the controller based on information from the processing part. Thereby, an additional rate of the flocculant and a change rate of the filtrate amount are controlled, and an optimum flocculation state is always obtained.
