PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document conveyer device and its paper feeding method which can detect the abnormality of a bottom plate fast, can prevent the breakage of the device when the bottom plate abnormality is detected, and can set the bottom plate lowering amount in order to detect the abnormality, according to the position of the bottom plate before its lowering operation. SOLUTION: When a bottom plate 7 is lowered, and when a most lowering position sensor 25 does not detect the bottom plate 7, and a feeding paper adequate position sensor 27 or the like detects the no movement of the bottom plate 7, during the time to drive a bottom plate elevating motor at a specific amount, the drive of the bottom plate elevating motor is stopped, and the abnormality is displayed. When the movement of the bottom plate 7 is detected, the drive of the bottom plate 7 is stopped, and then, the bottom plate elevating motor is driven in the lowering direction again, and the abnormality is detected. In this case, the adequate lowering amount when the abnormality is detected is found by a pulse counter, and a position detecting sensor.
