PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video camera for accelerating a control speed while maintaining a cost low and the control method. SOLUTION: When a state lower than a prescribed value (80% of exposure appropriate value, for instance) continues for prescribed time (15 fields, 240 ms, for instance) in signals from an image pickup element, since a microcomputer opens the diaphragm of an iris and immediately starts AGC control, the slow convergence of control near the diaphragm opening of the iris is evaded and the response speed of the control is accelerated.
