PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the speed (relaxation speed) at the time of layer transfer from a ferroelectric phase to an antiferroelectric phase by forming lacking parts of electrode materials in the regions of the plural striped transparent electrodes formed on the main surface of one substrate of two transparent substrates exclusive of the peripheral regions of the portions constituting pixel electrodes. SOLUTION: The regions of the opposite pixel electrodes 11, 13 formed on the main surfaces of the two transparent substrates exclusive of the peripheral edge regions of the one-side electrodes 13 are partly lacked 15a. As a result, part of the liquid crystal material held between the opposite pixel electrodes formed on the main surfaces of the two transparent substrates is not made into the ferroelectric phase in spite of the voltage impression to the pixel electrodes and remains at the original antiferroelectric phase. Then, the contact area of the liquid crystal material, which is held between the opposite pixel electrodes formed on the main surfaces of the two transparent substrates, causes the phase transition from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase by the voltage impression and causes the phase transition from the ferroelectric phase to the antiferroelectric phase by voltage release, with the liquid crystal material which remains at the original antiferroelectric phase is substantially increased.
