PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a character recognizing method which makes storage capacity small and performs a high-speed processing by performing caching processing when the rectangle size of a character image is a standard rectangle size and giving an attribute and performing a matching according to the attribute when the size is not the standard. SOLUTION: Classifying processing based upon a character rectangle size is performed (S11) and it is judged whether or not the character (= character property) size of an inputted character is a standard size (S12). When the size is not the standard character size, machining (S13, S14) is performed by character rectangle size large classification and when matching, namely, when a distance as a recognition result is short, the recognizing processing is finished. Then, when not matching, i.e., when the distance is long, the conventional recognizing processing is performed (S17). When the size is the standard character rectangle size, on the other hand, caching processing is performed (S15, S16) and when matching, i.e., when the distance is short, the recognizing processing is finished.
