CINNAMATE DERIVATIVE HAVING NERVE CELL PROTECTION ACTIVITY

PURPOSE: Cinnamate derivative which is isolated and recrystallized from Scrophularia buergeriana extract has excellent protection activity of nerve cell. CONSTITUTION: Scrophularia buergeriana extract can be prepared by extracting with mixture solvent of chloroform and methanol and separating with organic solvent containing dichloromethane and methanol etc. Active cinnamate derivative which is useful for treatment of stroke and degenerated neuronal disease is obtained by column chromatography and recrystallization of the extract. The cinnamate derivative is represented by formula I wherein R` is CH3 or H, and R2 is H or alpha-L-rhamnose. The cinnamate derivative actually means p-methoxy-trans-cinnamic acid, p-methoxy-trans-cinnamoyl-4'-alpha-L-rhamnose ester or cinnamic acid in detail.
