PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the mistaken detection of the abnormal heating of hot-water which is generated upon careless interception of a power supply, as the abnormality of an instrument. SOLUTION: A combustion instrument is constituted of a burner 5, a heat exchanger 3 for heating heat medium by the combustion operation of the burner 5, a circulating pump 7 for circulating the heated heat medium, a temperature detector 23 for detecting the temperature of the heat medium, and a control unit 20 for controlling the combustion operation. When the temperature detector 23 has detected an abnormal temperature exceeding the normal range of abnormality, the controller 20 decides that the instrument is abnormal and stops the combustion operation. On the other hand, when the temperature detector 23 has detected an abnormal temperature upon no combustion operation the circulation pump 7 is put ON forcibly until the detecting temperature is lowered to a value not higher than a predetermined temperature while the control unit will not indicate the abnormality of the instrument. According to this method, abnormality will not be generated in the device after restoring a power supply even when unprepared interception of the power supply, such as service interruption or the like, is generated during the combustion operation and the temperature of water is raised abnormally.
