PURPOSE: A start motor protecting device and a method are provided to protect the start motor from an excessive current or an excessive voltage. CONSTITUTION: The start motor protecting device is installed with:a battery(10) for feeding power to the start motor; a relay switch(20) for switching the on/off of the power fed from the battery; an ignition key switch(30) for starting an engine of a vehicle; a start motor(40) for starting an engine of a car; a micom(50) for controlling the on/off of the relay switch according to judging whether to start the engine by reading a number of revolutions of an engine per minute.
