In order to improve carcass quality and food conversion efficiency of an animal, an exogenous synthetic porcine growth hormone (or analogues, derivatives, or fragments thereof) is administered to the animal at a preselected liveweight and at a preselected constant dose rate depending on the sex of the animal for a preselected period. For example the exogenous synthetic porcine growth hormone may be administered initially at a liveweight of approximately 35 to 100 kg when the animal is a pig. When the pig is a female or a castrated male, the dose rate may be approximately 0.06 to 0.10 mg/kg liveweight/day. When the pig is an entire male, the dose rate may be approximately 0.01 to 0.15 mg/kg liveweight/day. The growth hormone may be administered at an increased dose rate for a further preselected period. |
