PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart both excellent running performance and durability to a magnetic recording medium by holding a lubricant contg. an ester compd. of a perfluoro-polyether having terminal hydroxyl groups and a long chain carboxylic acid and a perfluoroalkyl monoester of a branched carboxylic acid in the outermost layer of the medium. SOLUTION: At least a magnetic layer is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate and a lubricant contg. an ester compd. of a perfluoro-polyether having terminal hydroxyl groups and a long chain carboxylic acid represented by formula I (where Rf is a perfluoro-polyether chain and R1 is a hydrocarbon group or a fluorinated hydrocarbon group) and a perfluoroalkyl monoester of a branched carboxylic acid represented by formula II [where R2 and R3 are each an alkyl, (m) is an integer of >=2, (n) is an integer of >=4 and m+n<=30] is held in the outermost layer of the resultant magnetic recording medium. A protective film is appropriately formed as the outermost layer on the magnetic layer.
