The adjustable steering column includes an axial adjustment system consisting of an inner tube (1) and an outer tube sliding in each other. The energy absorbing device consists of an inner tube and an outer tube (3) sliding in each other. The axial adjustment external tube and the energy absorber inner tube are two portions of the same intermediate tube (2). During a shock the intermediate tube slides on the axial adjustment inner tube to come against an axial stop (17). Then the outer tube of the absorption system slides on the intermediate tube to carry out the energy absorption travel.
