The device uses a processor circuit to establish the formatting required for data conversion. In order to establish a connection between a data communications device (18) and an access point (22) operating in conjunction with a communications system, and a multimedia system (12), the system comprises a data port associated with the access point (22). A multimedia conversion circuit (32) is associated with the port and communicates with it to convert the signals into a multimedia data signal for transmission to the communications system (18), and to convert signals back into the format required for the multimedia system (12). A processor (26) is associated with the port for formatting the data communications between both the communications system and the device, and the multimedia system and the device.
