THERMAL TRANSFER RIBBON AND BASE FILM THEREOF

A base film for thermal transfer ribbons which comprises a biaxially oriented polyester film which comprises polyethylene 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate as the main component and gives, under a machine-direction load, a temperature-dimension curve in which the dimensional change up to 200 DEG C is 1.0 % or smaller based on the original film length and that up to 230 DEG C is 3.0 % or smaller based on the original film length. This film can have on one side a coating layer of at least one water-soluble or water-dispersible resin selected from the group consisting of a urethane resin, a polyester resin, an acrylic resin, and a polyester resin modified with a vinyl resin. The base film has excellent adhesion to layers of a sublimable ink. It gives a thermal transfer ribbon having such excellent printing performance that no blurring occurs even in high-speed printing and the ribbon does not rumple upon friction with the head.
