A control device (2) for operating a program-controlled domestic appliance (1), comprising control elements (3, 4, 8) or groups of control elements (5, 6, 7) arranged in specific areas, whereby said elements enable, for instance, the domestic appliance (1) to be turned on and allow the operating program to be selected and subsequently started. In order to provide enhanced usability, said areas are disposed according to the chronological time sequence in which the elements (3, 4, 8) or groups of elements (5, 6, 7) are actuated. Preferably, said areas are arranged in a row from left to right, corresponding to the general direction of writing. The successively actuated control elements (3, 4, 8) or groups of control elements (5, 6, 7) are arranged close to each other according to the order in which they are actuated. As a result, the domestic appliance (1) is easier and quicker to use and can be used in a more reliable manner.
