<p>An explicit rate ABR algorithm for use in an ATM switch. The available bandwidth for ABR connections (Abw) is determined after guaranteed traffic is served (step 102). The per-VC fair share of Abw is calculated in two different ways depending on whether the VC is congested. Where the VC is not congested, the fair share is calculated by dividing the Abw by an averaged number of currently active ABR connections (step 112). Where the VC is congested, the fair share is calculated by dividing the Abw by the number of currently established ABR connections (step 106) and reducing the fair share by damping factor (damp(x)) which is a function of the VC's queue length. A new explicit rate (ERnew) is determined by adding the fair share to the minimum-cell-rate (MCR) (steps 108, 114). The ERnew replaces the old explicit rate (ER) only if it is lower than the ER (step 120).</p> |
