The lighting unit (12) that has a socket and bulb (20) is supported on an arm (14) and within this arm the power carrying wires (30). The free end of the arm is formed with pins (38) for both connecting the unit to a power supply and for fixing to the item of furniture (40). A socket unit (42) is fixed into a recess in the furniture. An alternative version has lighting unit with spring contact clips that latch into a socket.
