Water, or other liquid, to be distilled is passed through tubes 17 and 19 and through the tubes 25 of heat-exchanger 22 wherein the water is heated by heating-medium flowing through casing 23; the hot water then flows through pipe 30 into tank 10 where a body 33 of the hot water is subjected to sonic vibrations by piston 46 which is connected by elastic stem 45 to the housing of a vibrationgenerator 42 of the type wherein a roter 55 (Fig. 2) is driven, by pressurized air introduced through nozzle 57, in an orbit within a cylindrical bearing 54. The pressurized air is controlled to cause the rotor to follow its orbital path at a frequency corresponding to the resonant frequency of the liquid-loaded resonator. Vapour bubbles are rapidly evolved from the body of hot water, the vapour condenses on the outside surface of tube 17, and the condensate collects in tray 38. Residual brine flows out of tank 10 through pipe 34. Piston 46, which fits closely within annular wall 48, is supported on an inflated tube 52 of rubber-like material. The piston is faced at the top with a rubberlike material made of polyurethane or silicone. Heat-exchanger 22 is also equipped with a resonator 44a, of the type described, the piston 46a radiating sound waves upwards into the heating-liquid of the heat-exchanger. An orbital-mass generator 80 is mounted on condenser tube 17, whereby droplets of condensate are quickly thrown off, and drop into tray 38. The top 13 of tank 10 possesses elasticity and, when actuated by sonic wave generator 70, causes the downward movement of sound waves into the vapour space of the tank, thereby effecting condensation and agglomeration of minute particles of condensate.
