Preparation of amino-acid esters (I) of sulf(at)o, sulf(at)oalkyl, carboxyl or tri(cyclo)alkyl-halo-ammonium substituted phenols comprises adding an inorganic acid chloride to a mixture of amino-acid (II) and substituted phenol (III) or the corresponding alkali metal salt and/or alkali metal phenolate. Preparation of amino-acid phenyl esters of formula (I) comprises adding an inorganic acid chloride to a mixture of amino-acid of formula (II) and a phenol of formula (III) with a sulf(at)o, sulf(at)oalkyl, carboxyl or tri(cyclo)alkyl-halo-ammonium substituent or the corresponding alkali metal salt and/or alkali metal phenolate; A = a group of the formula -CONR<2>- or -NR<2>CO-; R<1> = 1-26 carbon (C) alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or cycloalkyl or 6-14 C aryl or alkylaryl; R<2> = hydrogen (H) or as R<1>; R<3>, R<4> = H or 1-10 C alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or cycloalkyl; R<5> = H, halogen or 1-10 C alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl or alkoxy; n = 1-10; X = a group of the formula -SO3M, -OSO3M, -(CH2)mSO3M, (CH2)mO-SO3M, CO2M or NR<6>)3Y; M = H or an alkali ion; R<6> = 1-6 C alkyl or 4-6 C cycloalkyl; Y = halogen; m = 1 or 2
