PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound in a high yield by reacting sulfur tetrafluoride in a solvent amount of hydrogen fluoride with a specific terephthaldehyde at a subamibient temperature. SOLUTION: SF4 in a solvent amount of HF is reacted with a 1,4- terephthaladehyde replaced with 2-X (X is H, methyl, chloro, bromo or nitro) at a subambient temperature, preferably at a temp. of -60 to +30 deg.C under a reactional pressure of <6.5 psig to produce a 1,4-bis-(difluoromethyl)-2-X- benzene. The HF is preferably diluted with a neutral organic solvent such as methylene chloride, chloroform, CFCl3 or hexane. 1,4-Bis-(difluoromethyl) benzene (TEPX) is an important precursor in producing octafluoro-(2,2)- paracyclophane (SF4), which is useful for a dielectric, etc.
