The invention relates to a method for hydrogenating aromatic polymers in the presence of catalysts, where a metal or a mixture of metals from sub-group VIII of the periodic table is used as catalyst together with a support made of silicon dioxide, aluminium dioxide or a mixture thereof. The pore volume of catalyst pore diameters between 100 and 1,000 .ANG., as determined by mercur y porosimetry, is generally between 100 and 15 % in relation to total pore volume, as determined by mercury porosimetry.
