PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce mass of a carriage/actuator assembly for a head having a servo mechanism for positioning a track, in a magnetic tape drive. SOLUTION: A carriage 24 with a head 18 attached moves vertically along a guide rail 26, 28 by a voice coil motor installed under a plate 36. Since the carriage 24 partially bites inside the voice coil motor, the center of gravity of the carriage 24 is at a position close to the center of a force applied by the voice coil motor. Accordingly, the counter weight that is required for preventing the carriage 24 from swinging by this force by coinciding both positions can be made extremely small, thereby a servo system with a superior responsiveness is obtained.
