PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the pallet arrangement at the time of reversing the operating direction by driving a pallet as a boarding part for a passenge to control the space between the pallets, and eliminating shifting to correct the pallet arrangement. SOLUTION: In a rectilinear variable speed passenger conveyer using a pallet 1, the space between the pallets is varied to make the speed at the middle part higher than the speed of the boarding and alighting end portions. At this time, sometimes the conveyer is a little shifted in front and in rear to the proper position due to the occurrence of slip on rollers or the conveyer. A mechanism for eliminating such shifting uses a return side conveyer 9, and a pallet buffer area 10 is provided on this side of a terminal gear 8 on the boarding plate 2 side. As a method of correcting the pallet arrangement in reversing the operating direction of the passenger conveyer, the return side conveyer 9 is independently driven to correct the arrangement to the pallet buffer area 10, whereby the variable speed passenger conveyer can be used for both directions so that the arrangement of the pallet in reversing the operating direction can be optimized.
