PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide communication service different in a common channel (line). SOLUTION: This data communication system 200 serves different kinds of services (e.g. telephone service and high speed data transfer service) to a remote site, even when no splitter is provided to the remote site. A central site (e.g. central station) 202 can communicate with at least two different kinds of remote sites. The remote site of one kind includes a full splitter (that is, both a low-pass filter and a high-pass filter) and the remote site of the other kind 204 has only a partial splitter (that is, the remote site includes the high-pass filter 234 but does not include low-pass filter). The central site 202 selects one from among various receiver units according to the kind of modulation is use (e.g. a low-PAR technology).
