PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably producing high-performance carbon fibers having high strength and high elasticity in producing pitchbased carbon fibers. SOLUTION: The method of this invention is to conduct the melt spinning of mesophase pitch having >=90% optically anisotropic content 190280 deg.C softening point and <=300 deg.C temperature difference between a pour-starting temperature and the softening point when measured with a flow tester, to subject melt-spun fibers to infusibilization treatment and then to subject them to carbonization treatment. On this occasion, the optically anisotropic content in the mesophase pitch is 100%.
