PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively and economically decompose an org. chlorine compd. by adding and bringing a liq. mixture contg. an aq. alkali soln. and a dissolving agent capable of dissolving the org. chlorine compd. into contact with the org. chlorine compd. SOLUTION: In a method for decomposing an org. chlorine compd., a dissolving agent capable of dissolving the org. chlorine compd. slightly soluble in an aq. alkali soln. is used. Since the solubility of the org. chlorine compd. into the aq. alkali soln. is enhanced by using the dissolving agent, the alkali is easy to contact with the org. chlorine compd., the rate of decomposition reaction is increased and the cost of equipment can be reduced. The org. chlorine compd. such as tetrachloromethane or chloroform is decomposed and made harmless by adding and bringing a liq. mixture contg. the aq. alkali soln. such as sodium hydroxide and the dissolving agent such as liq. silicone oil into contact with the org. chlorine compd.
