PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of arbitrarily selecting the resolving power of an electrostatic latent image corresponding to data of a plurality of resolutions to easily change over the same. SOLUTION: In a scanning apparatus for irradiating a surface to be scanned with a plurality of laser beams having the pitch interval and beam diameter corresponding to resolving power at the same time to perform the scanning of the surface to be scanned, the number of beams preliminarily differentiated in at least one of the pitch interval and the beam diameter is made more than that of the beams applied to the surface to be scanned at the same time and the beam corresponding to an arbitrary resolution is selected to change over resolving power.
