PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a preparation for external use for skin having excellent skin protection, water retaining properties, excellent effect of skin smoothness, dampness and an elastic effect. SOLUTION: This preparation for external use for skin comprises 0.001-20.0 wt.% of an amino acid such as arginine, arginine hydrochloride or the like and 0.001-10.0 wt.% of fermented soybean essence. The fermented soybean essence is obtained by fermenting seeds of soybeans with Bacillus natto Sawamura to give 20% Bacillus natto Sawamura essence extracted with ethanol, incorporating the essence with absolute ethanol to precipitate a massive viscous material and dispersing the massive viscous material into a 10% ethanol solution. The fermented soybean essence is a viscous essence comprising aγ- glutamic acid polymer as a main component, a saccharide, etc.
