The method involves dividing data packets (ATM-Z1,ATM-Z2) into sub-structure elements and assigning channels of a multiplex connection to each sub-structure element (SE). One sub-structure element has an individually adjustable number of information segments which are received one after the other via the assigned channel. The transmission of the sub-structure elements is stopped dependent on the information. Preferably, the data packets are structured as ATM cells and the sub-structure elements include a cell head.
